An Illustrated Guide to RAPID RMA Installation on an MS-Windows Platform

This guide is prepared for the 5.2.3 release of RAPID RMA. Certain adjustments for later releases should be obvious, such as the use of the release number in the application distribution file name "RAPIDRMA-5_2_3-WIN.EXE".

Note regarding printing and viewing. This guide includes reproductions of the installation dialog boxes. To get related information close together so it can be viewed all at once, this document shows each dialog box and its related text side-by-side. It is best viewed with the browser set quite wide, or printed in a landscape orientation.

Start the Installation Tour.

Step 1.

  • As with all Windows installations, close and exit all applications before starting the installation.

  • Click the "Start" menu button in the taskbar and select "Run..." to bring up the "Run" dialog box.

Step 2.

  • In the "Run" dialog box, select the file to open (frequently the file is a program file to be executed). The full path to the installation program can be typed in, but most often it is more convenient to use the file chooser dialog box which is available through the "Browse..." button.

  • Click on the "Browse..." button to get the file chooser dialog box.

  • In the file chooser dialog box, navigate through the file system and select the RAPID RMA installation program "RAPIDRMA-5_2_3-WIN.EXE" that you downloaded.

  • Click on the "OK" button in the file browser dialog box.

  • The selected filename now shows in the "Open:" textbox of the "Run" dialog box.

  • Click on the appropriate button in the "Run" dialog box. Usually this is the "OK" button.

OK: Continue with the installation procedure by executing the installation program selected.

Cancel: Abandon the installation procedure without making any changes.

Browse: Bring up the file chooser dialog box for convenience in selecting the file to open.

Step 3.

  • The installation program announces its intentions in the "Setup" dialog box.

  • Click on the appropriate button. Usually that is the "Yes" button.

Yes: Continue with the installation procedure by continuing to execute this installation program.

No: Abandon the installation procedure without making any changes.

Step 4.

  • The RAPID RMA installation "Welcome" dialog box appears.

  • It repeats the program purpose of installing the RAPID RMA application and it specifies the versions that will be installed. It advises you to close closing all applications before installing applications.

  • Click on the appropriate button. Usually that is the "Next" button.

Back: Return to the previous dialog box where you can change choices made there.

    Next: Continue the installation procedure.

Cancel: Exit without making any changes.

Step 5.

  • A RAPID RMA pre-installation "Information" dialog box appears.

  • Note the warnings and informative messages here.

Please be sure that you uninstall any previously installed RAPID RMA applications before you continue with this installation.

Please make sure that the appropriate release level of Java run-time is installed. As of this writing, we require "JRE 1.3.1" and the current release on Sun's Java website is "JRE 1.3.1_01". Please install the Java run-time prior to installing RAPID RMA.

  • Please be aware of other dependencies and issues.

If you are installing one of the UML RMA components (for Rose RT or for Rhapsody), please be sure that the UML tool is installed prior to installing the RAPID RMA application.

  • Click on the appropriate button. Usually that is the "Next" button.

Back: Return to the previous dialog box where you can change choices made there.

    Next: Continue the installation procedure.

Cancel: Exit without making any changes.

Step 6.

  • The RAPID RMA installation "Select Destination Directory" dialog box appears.

  • Select the folder into which the RAPID RMA root folder "RAPID RMA" will be installed. The usual convention is to put this in the "Program Files" folder.

  • Click on the appropriate button. Usually that is the "Next" button.

Back: Return to the previous dialog box where you can change choices made there.

    Next: Continue the installation procedure.

Cancel: Exit without making any changes.

Step 7.

  • A RAPID RMA installation "Select Components" dialog box appears.

  • Select the set of components to install. The standalone RAPID RMA contains the core libraries and must always be installed. One or both of the UML integration components may be additionally installed.

These UML components only run under their respective UML modeling tool products. So, unless you have the modeling tool, don't bother to install the UML components as you won't be able to use them.

  • Click on the appropriate button. Usually that is the "Next" button.

Back: Return to the previous dialog box where you can change choices made there.

    Next: Continue the installation procedure.

Cancel: Exit without making any changes.

Step 8.

  • A RAPID RMA installation "Select Start Menu Folder" dialog box appears.

  • Select the folder in the Start Menu where the RAPID RMA folder of start options will be installed. The start options include shortcuts to the "README" files and "User's Guide" documentation, the "rma.bat" file that starts the application, and the uninstall procedure.

  • Click on the appropriate button. Usually that is the "Next" button.

Back: Return to the previous dialog box where you can change choices made there.

    Next: Continue the installation procedure.

Cancel: Exit without making any changes.

Step 9.

  • A RAPID RMA installation "Ready to Install" dialog box appears.

  • The installation options are summarized. If changes are needed, back up with the "Back" button on the dialog boxes to get back to the dialog box where you can make the change.

  • Click on the appropriate button. Usually that is the "Install" button.

Back: Return to the previous dialog box where you can change choices made there.

Install: Continue the installation procedure and start installing programs, files, and registry settings.

Cancel: Exit without making any changes.

Step 10.

  • The RAPID RMA installation "Installing" dialog box appears.

  • This dialog box indicates the progress of the installation process as a percentage of all that needs to be done.

  • Let the process run to completion.

Cancel: Even though a "Cancel" button appears, it is probably better to allow the installation to run to completion. You can always run the uninstall script later.

Step 11.

  • The RAPID RMA installation "Java settings" status box appears.

  • The box should indicate that Java settings are successfully initialized.

If the box indicates the settings were not successfully initialized, then most likely the JRE of the appropriate release level is not yet installed, or the JRE could not be found for some reason.

  • Click on the "OK" button.

OK: Dismiss the status box and continue the installation procedure.

Step 12.

  • When installing the UML components, additional confirmation boxes appear reporting the result of attempting to install those components.

  • If you are installing either of the UML components, the RAPID RMA installation "DLL Register Server" status box appears.

  • The UML components require a number of registry settings be added to the UML tools' subtree of registry settings. In this way, third-party tools are able to insert themselves into the UML tool (through entries on the UML application menus).

The box should indicate that the procedure succeeded.

If the process failed it is possible that the appropriate release of Java JRE was not available or that the UML tool was not available. Possibly one or the other is not installed or could not be found.

  • Click on the "OK" button.

OK: Dismiss the status box and continue the installation procedure.

Step 13.

  • A RAPID RMA post-installation "Information" dialog box appears.

  • Note the warnings and informative messages here.

A license key is required to run the RAPID RMA application. You can request one by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

  • Click on the "Next" button.

    Next: Continue the installation procedure.

Step 14.

  • The RAPID RMA installation "Finish" dialog box appears.

  • This dialog box contains checkboxes for the RAPID RMA components installed: standalone and optionally one or both of the Rose RT and Rhapsody components.

On clicking the "Finish" button, the "README"s that were checked will be displayed. This uses the system default for displaying ".txt" files, usually the Notepad accessory.

  • After marking the appropriate checkboxes, click on the "Finish" button.

Back: Return to the previous dialog box (which contains information about requesting a required license key).

Finish: Continue by exiting the installation procedure and open any "README"s that were checked.

Installation Done.

The installation procedure is now completed and you may run the application by clicking on icons in the Start Menu. Click on the Start button in the taskbar. Click on Programs. And now look for the RAPID RMA subtree of shortcuts where you selected to install it (in Step 8).
